Today I want to talk to you about one of my favorite breakfast choices…… Donuts. Now we all know about my love for muffins, but donuts are a very close second and lately they might even tie muffins for first place. I mean anything that has icing and I can have for breakfast is a winner for me. There are so many different types of donuts literally hundreds of different flavor and icing choices. Sometimes when I go to a bakery or someone brings in a dozen mixed donuts to work, the hardest decisions besides if I want to have a second donut is which type of donut to choose. Now I’m guessing we have all been there right, some choices are harder than others. I’m sure some people even have a single go to donut pick every time.
Let’s not forget the big difference in donuts, baked vs fried and of course yeast rising vs using a leavening agent. I know just thinking about all the options is exhausting. I’m going to make this real easy for you, today we are making baked donuts with chocolate cocoa icing. No frying and no yeast. Besides sometimes the simplest option is the most delicious, and I promise you in this case that is correct.
This recipe is very easy I promise you. All you need is a donut pan, and a lot of sprinkles. Well maybe a few more things. Now baked donuts using a leavening agent will give you a much cackier, heavier and sweet. Fried donuts using yeast to rise will give you a less heavy donut with a crisper, light and airy fried texture. Fried donuts are typically not as sweet as baked donuts are, however the tradeoff is the fried taste.
I am a fan of both fried and baked donuts, and I will show you some really good fried recipes too. But I figure I would start with the healthier option, after all they are being eaten for breakfast 😀
For baked donuts when I transfer the batter to the donut pan, I always grease the pan, and I usually put the batter into a piping bag that is typically used for icing. This gives me more control over the batter when I am swirling it around in a circle in the donut pan. If you do not have a piping bag or do not want to use one feel free to spoon the batter in. Now on to the toughest choice, which sprinkles to use 😆
